Centres and Facilities

Professors and students with the Department of Chemistry are supported by these research centres:

  • NMR-3 - The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Research Resource (NMR-3) supports NMR-related research. It houses five NMR spectrometers capable of studying both liquid and solid samples.
  • DALX - The X-Ray Crystallography Centre - provides a comprehensive crystallographic service ranging from recrystallisation and crystal morphology studies through X-ray powder work and routine X-ray single-crystal structure analysis.
  • Mass Spectrometry Laboratory - A range of mass spectrometry facilities are available (EI, ESI, APCI, CI and MALDI).  Researchers within and outside the Department can access mass spectrometry facilities through service provisions, and hands-on use is available in some cases.  High-resolution (accurate mass) EI and ESI services are available, as well as low-resolution facilities for other ionization modes.
  • TARC - The Trace Analysis Research Centre - is a major centre for research in analytical chemistry.
  • The Department of Chemistry is also active in the Institute for Research in Materials. IRM is comprised of nearly 80 faculty members in six faculties and 20 departments. Research topics range from nanomaterials to macroscopic structures and include both experimental and theoretical approaches.
