Michelle Everist Wins a Vanier Graduate Scholarship

Chemistry graduate student Michelle Everist has been awarded a prestigious Vanier Graduate Scholarship in recognition of her academic excellence and her community leadership. The Vanier Scholarship, named after Georges P. Vanier, Canada's 19th Governor General, is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years of doctoral studies.

A member of the Andreas group, Michelle is carrying out research to improve electrochemical biosensors for the quantification of hormones. Biosensors have generated a lot of interest because of their medical, food, and environmental applications. More recently, electrochemical biosensors have emerged for fast, accurate, and analyte-specific analysis of biomolecules both in vivo and in vitro

Outside of the lab, Michelle has also been a leader in her community through involvement with various organizations including the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Shinerama, Best Buddies Canada, and others. This coming August, Michelle will travel to Brazil to volunteer her time in rural hospitals and medical clinics. As a Vanier Scholar, Michelle intends to continue and expand her involvement in extracurricular activities and community leadership. Michelle’s research reflects her strong desire to make real, significant and long-lasting contributions to the benefit of society.
