Russell Boyd Wins the 2009 Montreal Medal

The Department of Chemistry is delighted to report that Professor Russell Boyd has been awarded the 2009 Montreal Medal. One of the most prestigious chemistry awards in Canada, the Montreal Medal is a mark of distinction and honour for leadership in or outstanding contributions to the profession of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada. It is sponsored by the Montreal CIC Local Section. The official citation for the award is given below.

Professor Russell Boyd is internationally recognized for his original and innovative contributions to the application of computational methods to a wide range of problems in chemistry and biochemistry.  He is a leader in the use of advanced computational methods to understand the mechanisms of biological reactions, particularly the mode of action of biocatalysts and enzymes, the effects of radiation on DNA and proteins, and the mechanism by which a leading anti-tumour drug cleaves DNA.  His research accomplishments have been recognized by being awarded a Faculty of Science Killam Professorship (1997-2002), the Alexander McLeod Chair of Chemistry (career appointment) and the 1983 APICS/Fraser Medal.  He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.

Professor Boyd has trained many excellent young scientists, with 10 of his former students and PDFs holding tenure-track or tenure positions in Canada, and several others holding academic appointments in universities abroad.

In addition to his outstanding contributions to scientific research and training, Professor Boyd has held many prominent positions in the scientific community including President of the CSC, Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Dalhousie University (13 years), Editor of the Canadian Journal of Chemistry, member of many NSERC Selection Committees.

The achievements, honours and contributions described above highlight the commitment of Russell Boyd to his discipline and his community.  Those who know Russell and have worked with him, will attest to his dedication and passion for the scientific community, academia and Dalhousie University.  It is these features that make Russell Boyd an excellent candidate for the prestigious Montreal Medal.
