The Donald Arnold Scholarship recognizes the distinguished contributions of Professor Emeritus Don Arnold to chemistry, especially in the field of organic photochemistry. Dr. Arnold joined the Department in 1979 as a Killam Professor, became the sixth holder of the Alexander McLeod Chair in 2001 and was named Professor Emeritus in 2001. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry who has an excellent academic record and has demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for research. The Department of Chemistry awarded the first Donald Arnold Scholarship in September 2005. (Return)
The Gerry Dauphinee Scholarship was established through the generosity and initiative of Robie Macdonald (BSc '68, PhD '72, Hayes) and Mrs. Sylvia Dauphinee to commemorate Gerry Dauphinee's (BSc '47, MSc '53, Chute) dedication to excellence in the teaching of chemistry. The scholarship is awarded to a Dalhousie chemistry graduate student who has excelled in research and demonstrated an interest in, and commitment to the subject of chemistry and to bringing chemistry 'alive' for the students. In recognition of Professor Leffek's contribution to Dalhousie University and to the profession of chemistry in Canada, the Department awards an annual prize for the best Ph.D. thesis in chemistry. Dr. Leffek was a professor of chemistry from 1961 to 1994 and Dean of Graduate Studies from 1972 to 1990. (Return)
These awards, offered for the first time in 1992 to honour Professor Emeritus D.E. Ryan, a long-time member of the Department of Chemistry, are to reward graduate students who have excelled in several aspects of their graduate programs in chemistry at Dalhousie University. Dr. Ryan was the prime mover in founding the Trace Analysis Research Centre (1971) and the Dalhousie University SLOWPOKE Reactor Facility (1976). (Return)
The family of the late Anna Wilson (BSc '27, MSc '28) started a scholarship fund in 1997 in memory of the second woman to receive an MSc degree in Chemistry from Dalhousie University. Anna Wilson worked as an analytical chemist at the Federal Fisheries Laboratory in Halifax immediately after graduation until 1931 when the opening of the Fisheries Research Station in Bay Bulls drew her back to her native Newfoundland. Her distinguished career included 27 years with Merck in Montreal. (Return)
President's Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
Several awards are presented annually by the President of Dalhousie University to recognize the indispensable contribution of graduate teaching assistantships to university education. (Return)
NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) awards scholarships to assist in the provision of highly qualified scientists and engineers by providing financial support to excellent students working towards a master's or doctorate degree. (Return)
Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Postgraduate Scholarships
Dalhousie University offers the Izaak Walton Killam Scholarships on the basis of high scholastic achievement and research potential.
