Area of Chemical Expertise: Inorganic Chemistry.
Dr. Grundy is interested in the synthesis and reactivity of small reactive molecular and ionic species as ligands coordinated to one or more transition metals. Approaches used vary from the direct interaction of unusual ligands with appropriate metal comp lexes to the synthesis of the ligated species from a simple precursor within the coordination sphere of the metal. The latter approach often allows for the synthesis of exotic species which cannot exist independently. Of particular interest are those liga nds that are often described as being "non-innocent" or amphoteric. These are ligands that can effect dramatic changes in their electronic interactions with the metal through a relatively minor change in geometry. In so doing they often affect the coordin ation chemistry and geometry of the metal and often impart catalytic activity to the complex. In addition, the chemistry of the ligated species varies dramatically from one environment to another.
