Research Interests: Analytical Chemistry/Nuclear Chemistry.

The research interests of Dr. Chatt's group encompass a number of areas in analytical chemistry: nuclear analytical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry and radioactive waste management studies. Research projects are ofte n done in cooperation with international and national agencies, and are generally interdisciplinary in nature. For example, one project involves developing instrumental, preconcentration and radiochemical neutron activation analysis (NAA) methods using th e SLOWPOKE-2 reactor for the determination of trace elements of nutritional and toxicological importance in human diets. In bioanalytical chemistry, the Chatt group is involved in studies on separation, purification and characterization of protein-bound t race elements and extractable organic chlorine (EOCL) compounds by a combination of analytical and biochemical techniques. A few new selenoproteins in the nuclei and cytosol fractions of bovine kidneys have been found. Investigations on long-range transpo rt of toxic elements through acid rain, snow and fog are continuing. Fundamental studies on short-lived neutron activation products (half-lives around 20 milliseconds) and high count-rate (about 2 million counts per second) and anticoincidence gamma-ray spectroscopy are being done.
