About the Department of Chemistry

The Department serves as a major resource for  research in the Atlantic Region by providing services through its many Centres and Facilities.

The Department of Chemistry has 26 professors, four emeritus professors, 13 adjunct professors, seven  instructors, 14 technical/administrative staff and around 70 graduate students carrying out research towards their MSc and PhD degrees. In addition, the department welcomes annually about five visiting scientists, 15 postdoctoral researchers and research associates and 25 summer research assistants.

The Department offers a total of 45 undergraduate chemistry classes taken by about 3,000 students per year. Typically, there are 40 students registered in Honours and Combined Honours programs and a larger number in the Majors program.

The Department is proud of both its teaching and its research, activities that are closely intertwined. Highlights include the computer-aided learning laboratory, laser photolysis laboratories, the Atlantic Region Magnetic Resonance Centre, the Trace Analysis Research Centre, the Slowpoke Nuclear Reactor Facility, the Dalhousie X-ray Diffraction Facility, the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory and many other specialized facilities. The Department carries out research in all areas of chemistry: analytical, bio-organic, computational, environmental, inorganic, materials, organic, physical and theoretical.

Research grants and contracts received by the Department exceed $3-million per year.
